This is not a 'beachy' area which is why the Costa Blanca
North has grown up with more residential than holiday homes.
Sandy inlets and coves are more common than long sandy
stretches of beach - privately owned villas more the 'norm'
than high rise apartment blocks. In fact high rise apartment
blocks are very few and far between. Apart from Benidorm and a
couple in Calpe apartment developments are virtually
non-existent. It really is what we call 'VILLA COUNTRY'.

A bit of Culture
With roots going back to the Bronze Age and beyond the first
urban settlement in the Alicante can be traced back to the 4th
century BC when the Iberian town of Tossal de Manises was
founded in what is now known as Albufereta. When Spain became
part of the Roman Empire this small town was re-named Lucentum
and as it prospered and developed under the Romans, the
emperor Augustus granted the town "Municipum" status. After
the retreat of Rome and the decline of Christian power came
the invasion of the Moors and Islam.
The Alicante of today has, to a large extent origins dating
from Moorish Spain. The Moors built many Mosques and laid out
the structure plan of the town. Many Arabic remains have been
found in the areas around the old Mosques, which were
subsequently converted to Christian churches after the town
was won back to Christendom by Alfonso X el Sabio in 1247.
From that time onwards Alicante was either part of the Crown
of Castilla or the Crown of Aragon until eventually King
Ferdinand the Catholic granted Alicante the designation of
"City" in 1490. This long, exciting and vibrant history with
the consequent cross-pollination of cultures has all
contributed to the Alicante of today.
Alicante is famous for interesting and dynamic Museums and Art
Galleries. Here below are just a few of the significant
permanent exhibitions that art and culture lovers will find of
